The EU must support the growing discontent of Belarusians, and demand democratic elections.

Deputy Head of the European Parliament delegation on relations with Belarus, MP from Sweden Karin Karlsbro commented upon the initiative to impose sanctions against Lukashenka and Belarusian officials, for the Charter97.org website.

“The inadequacy of the rule of the Lukashenka regime has become even more evident during the crisis caused by the coronavirus, and it is time to act now.

The upcoming election, and growing discontent provide the EU with a rare opportunity to demand democratic elections in Belarus, and the EU should use this opportunity,” Karin Karlsbro said.

Important to note, 31 deputies from almost all fractions of the European Parliament demanded the introduction of sanctions “against Belarusian officials and companies involved in limiting human and democratic rights” during the election campaign.

The first on the list of signatories is Karin Karlsbro, Deputy Head of the European Parliament’s delegation on relations with Belarus.
