OSCE will Create an Expert Mission on Belarus

17 OSCE participating states announced the initiation of the "Moscow Mechanism" to investigate the events in Belarus.

The OSCE intends to use the "Moscow Mechanism" to create an independent expert mission to resolve the crisis in Belarus, the US Permanent Mission to the OSCE said on Thursday, interfax.by reports.

"Today, 17 OSCE participating states, including the United States, are activating the OSCE "Moscow Mechanism" to establish an independent expert mission to address credible reports of serious human rights violations and violations such as election fraud and widespread interference with freedom of expression and the right to peaceful assembly in Belarus ", - reads the press release of the American Permanent Mission to the OSCE.

The expert mission will subsequently draw up a report, which will contain recommendations to the Belarusian authorities, the OSCE, and the international community on "possible solutions" to the problems that have arisen in the republic.

In the document, the OSCE calls on the Belarusian authorities to cooperate with this mission.

The OSCE explains that "The Moscow Mechanism allows a group of ten or more participating countries to establish a mission of independent experts to examine particularly serious threats to the implementation of human rights obligations" in Belarus.

"According to many reliable reports, the authorities in Belarus illegally and forcibly detained, arrested, and mistreated many Belarusians who peacefully demanded the right to determine their country's course through free and fair elections," the press release said.

In addition, the OSCE noted that the country's authorities did not react in any way to "the previous proposals of the OSCE leadership to facilitate the national dialogue between the Belarusian authorities and representatives of the people of Belarus."

Mass protests against the results of the presidential elections have continued in Belarus since August 9.
