It is time to defend the values of the international community.

This opinion was expressed by Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda, speaking on Tuesday at the general political debate of the 75th session of the UN General Assembly. The general political debate in the public is held from 22 to 29 September in the format of pre-recorded video presentations, Radio Svaboda reports.

"Fundamental foundations of democratic society and freedom of speech, as well as the right to self-determination are under attack in Belarus, - the politician said. - The time has come to defend the values of the international community".

According to Nauseda, "the UN must closely monitor the situation in Belarus, call on its authorities to refrain from the use of force, ensure respect for human rights and initiate the transfer of power".

The topic of Belarus was also present in the speeches of other heads of state at the assembly. French President Emmanuel Macron said that "in the case of Belarus, there is a risk of a break up on the European continent".

Macron also stressed that he considers it necessary to solve the Belarusian crisis through the mediation of the OSCE. According to him, he together with German Chancellor Angela Merkel expressed this viewpoint during the contacts with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Latvian President Egils Levits noted in his speech that he is "following the situation in Belarus with deep concern" and called for new, democratic and transparent elections in the country and an end to repressions against demonstrators.

"We also urge Russia to refrain from further interference in Belarus, - he added, specifying that "Latvia is always ready to share its rich experience in restoring democracy and freedom".
