Military Planes Flew Over Minsk

What's the matter?

Yesterday, January 12, worried people repeatedly asked journalists what kind of planes suddenly and massively began to fly over Minsk. According to readers, there are too many boards, and a legitimate question arises: Is this a normal situation?

During the day, the planes were seen at least in the area of the Spartyunaya and Kamennaya Horka metro stations, and the aircraft were also seen over Hrushauka and the Zachad-3 microdistrict. Some planes were identified as transporters, others as fighters. While the flights of military transport aircraft in the Minsk region are generally not uncommon, combat aircraft do not fly over the capital every month.

For an explanation, we turned to the Belarusian air spotters: they are usually aware of the events concerning the aircraft and helicopters flying over Belarus. They agreed to clarify the situation.

Apparently, two events coincided today. Transport workers flying over Minsk are most likely scheduled flights of planes taking off from the Machulishchy airfield (this is where they are usually based). Actually, the Il-76MD transport aircraft, which can be seen in the video frames above, is from there - its flights have been noticed more than once before. Besides it, the smaller military transport aircraft An-26 took off from Machulishchy.

But fighters are not based near Minsk; their main airfield is located in Baranavichy. As the participants in the spotter movement explained to us, now the runway is being repaired at the Baranavichy airfield, and the aircraft are temporarily relocated to Machulishchy - among them, there are the long-used MiG-29s as well as the new Su-30S that entered service last summer.
