Tsikhanouskaya Will Address UN Security Council Meeting On Situation In Belarus

An online meeting of the UN Security Council on the situation of media freedom in Belarus will be held on January 22. Former presidential candidate Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya will take part in it.

As BelaPAN reports, citing the press service of the politician, the meeting was initiated by members of the Security Council of Estonia, France, Ireland, Norway, Britain and the United States.

According to Tsikhanouskaya's press service, she will pay attention to the cases of Ihoar Losik, who has been on hunger strike for more than a month; of journalists Katsiaryna Barysevich, Katsiaryna Andreyava, Darja Chultsova, and media manager Andrei Aliaksandrau.

Also, she will talk about Siarhei Tsikhanouski's case, under which Dzmitry Furmanau, Uladzimir Kniha and Yauhen Raznichenka are tried, as well as share other stories about prisoners of conscience.

Tsikhanouskaya will raise the issue of "an international investigation into the crimes of the Lukashenka regime and the convening of a formal session of the UN Security Council to address the crisis in Belarus," the report says.

This is the second meeting of the UN Security Council with Tsikhanouskaya's participation. The first one was held on September 4, then she called for sanctions against those involved in human rights violations in Belarus, as well as for taking measures to stop violence.
