Makei under Sanctions: What Will Such a Move by the EU Mean for the Regime?
Uladzimir Makei

The Belarusian Foreign Ministry has transferred itself to the cohort of people with whom nobody wants to shake hands.

Foreign Minister of Belarus Uladzimir Makei may, as reported by news agencies, be on the updated sanctions list, which is being prepared by the EU, dw.com writes.

What does such a step mean if it is really taken by Brussels?

Anatol Kotau, who is responsible for foreign policy at the People's Anti-Crisis Administration (NAU), points to the unprecedented nature of the inclusion of the Belarusian Foreign Minister in the sanctions list, if this happens. And he has the following explanation for this: "What does this mean? Most likely, everyone was convinced that the Belarusian Foreign Ministry is absolutely incapable of negotiation. If the Minister of Foreign Affairs sinks to the point that he directly threatens to destroy civil society, if he presents the UN Secretary-General with materials that this organization allegedly sponsored protests in Belarus, then these two things are already enough to admit that this person is simply no longer what to talk about."

The Belarusian Foreign Ministry is not involved in foreign policy but is a propaganda mouthpiece. At the same time, the representative of the NAU pays tribute to the Belarusian diplomacy - for 20 years, it has been defining the "red lines" in domestic politics: "You can't be a cannibal inside the country and have someone talk to you outside. There were certain frameworks that were dictated from outside. In 2020, this model broke down, so there was no room for liberalism even in foreign policy." In his opinion, this was especially evident after the forced landing of the Ryan Air plane in Minsk and the refugee crisis on the border of Belarus with Poland and Lithuania.

Uladzimir Makei is an ordinary executor of Lukashenka's will, Anatol Kotau is sure. Now, according to him, the entire so-called vertical of power is engaged in this: "There is one collective Lukashenka, any attempt in any sphere to say something personally on your own quickly is suppressed."

The representative of NAU continues that, Makei, who was considered one of the regime's gray cardinals, transferred himself to the cohort of those with whom nobody wants to shake hands: “He was perceived as a man of rather liberal views - because of his love for the Belarusian language and culture. And up to a certain moment, he could really influence the internal policy through the foreign policy. For him and for the Foreign Ministry, this ended in 2020. Now it's like, I don't know, the foreign ministry of North Korea - given that Belarus has an even worse status in Europe."
