Kick out Thugs
Iryna Khalip

There is only three per cent of them.

The other day, an employee of the Belarusian embassy in Lithuania attacked Vilnius residents who had brought candles and portraits of the dead to the building of the diplomatic mission. The victims called the police. Policemen, working in the territory, which includes the Belarusian embassy, probably haven't been surprised. They know that ordinary thugs work in this house under a piece of red and green fabric.

The ordinary thug is the only species that has survived in the Belarusian state structures. All sapiens either escaped from there voluntarily, or were dismissed due to species incompatibility, or gradually, in the process of natural selection, lost their initial properties and closely assimilated to the thugs. It helped them to stay in those structures. Nowadays, it's barely possible to distinguish a culture minister from an interior minister, a riot policeman from a diplomat, a KGB officer from a rector in Belarus. Power now has a homogeneous consistency.

It is both bad and good. It is bad because there is no point trying to negotiate with criminals. They are not subject to re-education (they can only change clothes). They hate people with critical thinking. They are extremely greedy for other people's property: real estate, freedom, lives. A colleague, who has recently served 15 days in jail under Article 23.34, told me after the release how "witness Gromov" in uniform testified against her. During a break, while the judge in the next room was writing a decision, yelled: "Get in the cage, you b*tch! They'll beat the crap out of you here! Stay away from the window, I said!"

A colleague has worked at protests for years. After the rallies, she has been near all the police departments of the city. She knows almost all the staff of the Minsk police by name. "You know, those goblins who worked ten or fifteen years ago are no longer there. They retired. Now, there are only young guys with negative IQ and from troubled families," she told me. Can you imagine what kind of "workforce" they have now and what challenges they face if even the experienced goblins couldn't handle it?

On the other hand, it is good. It simplifies our task. The thug-like mouldy government consists of individuals who act predictably. We know what to expect from them. Thugs are cowardly and prefer to snatch people's wallets and flags in the dark. They snatch ribbons, cell phones and change from pockets. They like to do nasty things at night, like disabling sewers and electricity in Novaya Borovaya. But thugs are cowardly and usually run away, even at loud noises. When they face an obstacle in the form of a large number of people, then it's no wonder: they run, pushing each other and shouting "that's him, that's not me!"

So, it's not so hard to get rid of them. Yes, they have shoulder straps, batons, grenades, arrest warrants, and keys to cells and handcuffs. But they're still three per cent. So we, the unarmed, have such a colossal numerical superiority that we should come together in one place and at one time. That will be enough. Then we'll have a lot of trouble getting them out of all the cracks.

In the meantime, they interrogate, testify in courts, and pass sentences. In the evenings, they roam the yards, cut off ribbons and tear down flags. Then they gather behind garages, squat comfortably, and drink Massandra (sort of wine). By the way, now I understand why Russian Ambassador Mezentsev did not even stay in this position for two years. All because of Massandra. As soon as the telephone conversations of the thugs appeared on the Internet, his bosses in Moscow probably called him and said: "Mezentsev, we gave you a case of port wine for what purpose? For official entertainment! So why are you handing it out to the rabble in the streets?"

He had nothing to say.
