Amnesty International: We Call for Solidarity with the Courageous Women of Belarus

Belarusian women play a prominent role in protests.

Women in Belarus play a prominent role in protests, being subjected to reprisals and threats, the international human rights organization Amnesty International said in a press release on Sunday. Women's organizations of the country are subject to special, specific persecution, human rights activists note, as Voice of America reports.

The interlocutors of Amnesty International who were arrested and interrogated by the security forces accused them of being “bad mothers,” that they are “bad wives,” and the authorities threatened to take their children away from them. During their detention, they faced brutality, someone was thrown into prison as a result of unfounded criminal prosecution, according to a press release from Amnesty International.

Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, forced to emigrate presidential candidate, head of her headquarters Maryja Kalesnikava, thrown into prison, Marfa Rabkova, imprisoned human rights activist, journalists Katsiaryna Bakhvalava and Daryja Chultsova, sentenced to two years in prison for broadcasting a protest rally are just a few of the many women whose names have become synonymous with the struggle for freedom and human rights in Belarus, says Aisha Jung, Senior Campaign Manager for Amnesty International in Belarus. - Women in Belarus risked a lot when they defended their beliefs. Now the Belarusian authorities are taking even more brutal measures against women activists, their organizations, and families.”

“We call for solidarity with the courageous women of Belarus in their struggle for freedom and human rights. In their struggle, they challenge patriarchal attitudes and repressive governments that seek to suppress human rights, the change, and progress that Belarusians are calling for,” Aisha Jung told Amnesty International supporters.

Amnesty International's global campaign of solidarity with protesters in Belarus #StandWithBelarus was launched on January 27, 2021, with the publication of a report showing how the Belarusian authorities used the justice system to punish torture victims, not criminals. The organization regularly publishes materials highlighting the persecution of various strata of Belarusian society. Amnesty International activists around the world will take part in various actions to demonstrate their solidarity with peaceful demonstrators in Belarus.
