OSCE Representative Urges Belarusian Authorities to Release All Journalists
Teresa Ribeiro

Official Minsk was urged to comply with its international obligations.

The OSCE Representative on Freedom of Media Teresa Ribeiro commented on the recent cases of persecution of journalists in Belarus, reports the Belsat website.

Ribeiro mentions the detention of photo correspondent Tatiana Kapitonova (10 days of administrative arrest), TUT.by journalist Liubov Kasperovich (15 days of arrest) and Mahiliou journalists Alexander Burakov and Vladimir Laptsevich (20 days of arrest each).

Ribeiro calls on the Belarusian authorities to "break the negative trend" and perform their duties within the OSCE.

"The way the Belarusian authorities treat media workers raises a serious concern and, along with other disturbing developments related to media freedom in the country in recent months, seriously jeopardizes the fundamental human right to freedom of expression," they said.

"I urge the authorities to stop persecuting journalists and to release all prisoners," Ribeiro said.
