Viktar Babaryka: "Romanian scenario" Of Power Change Possible In Belarus
VICTAR BABARYKA

The politician called on Russia not to be "an external sponsor of the regime."

Former potential presidential contender in the 2020 elections, former head of Belgazprombank Viktar Babaryka gave a distant interview from behind the bars to the Russian edition of RBC.

In it, the politician stated that a "Romanian scenario" of a change of power is possible in Belarus (in 1989, the head of communist Romania, Nicolae Ceausescu, tried to flee the country during mass protests, but he was caught and shot together with his wife). However, from this "no one, including Russia, will benefit."

If the situation in Belarus is not resolved in a timely manner, "there is a possibility of oversleeping the situation," he notes. "The events from May to August 2020 developed so rapidly that no one had time to react. And God forbid, if Romania's scenario comes true, no one will benefit from this. Although now it seems that this cannot happen in Belarus, but the probability actually exists," Viktar Babaryka said.

The politician also called on Russia not to be "an external sponsor of the regime."

“Russia sometimes proceeds from the philosophy that if they have already given out money, then to refuse support means to lose. But this is the principle of a madhouse, the longer you give the money away, the more sorry it becomes to lose it, you need to move away from this," he said. Because "after all the events, including the landing of the plane, it is also difficult to say with confidence that the situation is being managed sufficiently," Babaryka said.
