Latvia and Lithuania won't buy electricity from Belarus. The countries will invite experts to ensure complete assurance that electricity from the neighboring country is not supplied to the Baltic States.
This is reported by the press service of the Latvian Economy Ministry.
The press release noted that yesterday, on July 1, Latvian Economy Minister Janis Vitenbergs and Lithuanian Energy Minister Dainius Kreivis had a meeting. During the meeting they confirmed the common position of the two countries not to buy electricity from Belarus.
"The ministers agreed that both countries have made a clear commitment not to buy electricity from Belarus, and agreed that any nuclear power plant, including the Astravets Nuclear Power Plant (NPP), must meet all safety standards," reads the report.
To fulfill this obligation, Latvia has improved its legal framework, which provides a procedure for monitoring commercial flows of electricity in order to prevent Belarusian electricity from entering the Baltic States market. National system operators and experts will be invited to do so.
The meeting also discussed electricity trade with third countries and how this affects energy security and the progress of the synchronization project.
