White House: USA Will Continue To Impose Sanctions To Hold Lukashenka Regime Accountable

Washington will support the people of Belarus.

The U.S. and allies will continue their efforts to hold Aliaksandr Lukashenka's regime accountable for its actions, including through sanctions, said spokeswoman for the National Security Council Emily Horn.

On July 20, National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan met with Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya. The politician expressed his support for the people of Belarus.

"The United States, together with its partners and allies, will continue its efforts to hold the Lukashenka regime accountable for its actions, including through sanctions," the White House press service reported.

Sullivan reminded of the Biden administration's demand for the Belarusian authorities to conduct an international investigation of the May 23 events, when a Ryanair flight from Athens to Vilnius was forcibly grounded in Minsk, to release all political prisoners, and establish a dialogue with the leaders of the Belarusian democratic opposition and civil society, which would lead to free and fair presidential elections under OSCE observation.
