European Parliament Calls For Including Belarus Into List Of Countries Which Assist Money Laundering

What can it affect?

Yesterday, the European Parliament voted for a resolution recognizing Russia as a sponsor of terrorism by a majority vote. MEPs intend to pave the way to hold Putin and the Russian government accountable to an international tribunal.

The resolution also mentions Belarus. The European Parliament calls to add Belarus and Russia to the list of countries helping to launder money and finance terrorism. At present the list includes the Bahamas, Barbados, Botswana, Cambodia, Ghana, Jamaica, Mauritius, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nicaragua, Panama and Zimbabwe.

If a country appears on the EU risk list, banks and other professional bodies are required to increase controls on all business transactions involving operators based in those countries. Another consequence is that no EU funds can usually be sent to such countries.

The MPs also call for Lukashenka to be considered "an accomplice in the war of aggression against Ukraine for his role in ensuring attacks from the territory of Belarus and openly supporting Russian aggression".

The resolution was adopted by 494 votes in favour, 58 against and 44 abstentions.
