Such restrictions are being imposed for the first time since the Second World War.

One of four Grand Slam tournaments is planning to ban athletes from Belarus and Russia because of the countries' aggression against Ukraine, The New York times reports.

The Wimbledon tournament begins on June 27 and will be the first to restrict the participation of individual athletes from Belarus and Russia. This will be the first time since World War II, when players from Germany, Japan and other countries were not allowed to participate in the tournament.

A number of highly ranked players, including Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka and Viktoryja Azarenka, could fall under the ban.
