Ukraine May Close Its Section Of Druzhba Pipeline

In what case will such a decision be made?

An embargo on the purchase of Russian oil may come into full force in the EU in six months. However, Slovakia and Hungary are asking to postpone this restriction for them until the end of 2023, since they are seriously dependent on energy resources from Russia. Ukraine considers such a step a dangerous precedent and may cut off oil supplies to these countries through the Druzhba pipeline, which also passes Ukraine. Advisor to the Minister of Energy Lana Zerkal stated this.

In an interview with liga.net, she said that such restrictions are provided with the sixth package of sanctions, which can soon be adopted in the EU.

We are talking about the fact that in 9 months Europe will ban buying gasoline from Russia. However, Slovakia and Hungary, due to their high dependence on Russian energy carriers, are asking to be granted a "delay" until the end of 2023.

“Slovakia and Hungary really want to get an exception. They want to be able to continue buying Russian oil until the end of 2023," Zerkal said.

According to her, the exceptions for the two states mentioned above could create a dangerous precedent. However, Ukraine can influence the situation. Hungary and Slovakia receive oil from Russia via the Druzhba pipeline. Kyiv can actually block such deliveries through its pipeline section.

"Hungary and Slovakia receive oil from Russia through the Druzhba pipeline. And it so happened that it passed through Ukraine. It would be quite logical to synchronize actions with the EU and apply sanctions on the transportation of Russian oil using the same transition period. Thus, we will contribute to maintaining the unity of the sanctions policy in the EU," said Lana Zerkal.
