New EU Sanctions Against Russia May Affect Belarusian IT Sector

The restrictions will also include measures to limit the price of Russian oil and the expansion of personal sanctions.

A new package of EU sanctions against Russia may affect the IT sector. At the same time, Poland and the Baltic countries propose to expand restrictive measures to Belarus. This is stated in the article by the Financial Times.

EU foreign ministers at an emergency meeting in New York, convened after the announcement of partial mobilization in Russia and referendums in the occupied territories of Ukraine, discussed the next possible restrictive measures that could be applied. The European Commission may submit formal proposals for its content next week, and a formal decision on implementation may be made in mid-October. Initially, it was reported that it would include measures to limit the price of Russian oil, as well as the expansion of personal sanctions.

According to Financial Times sources, in addition to the mechanism to limit the price of Russian oil, the package may include measures aimed at the Russian sphere of information technology, cybersecurity and software. The publication does not report the kind of measures. In addition, Poland and the Baltic countries also propose more Russian banks forced off Swift system and a ban on diamond imports. Their ideas include restrictions on the availability of information and other services in the IT sector, being introduced against Belarus as well.
