Chinese Huawei 'Evacuated' Employees From Russia To Kazakhstan And Uzbekistan

The largest smartphone manufacturer is afraid of falling under secondary sanctions.

China's largest smartphone producer Huawei has moved staff out of Russia to Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. Huawei began to relocate its employees to the CIS countries in the spring of 2022 due to the war in Ukraine. The Vedomosti news publisher writes about this, citing sources.

“Some of these employees are managers and heads of Huawei divisions from China, who were sent to Russia at the beginning of the year,” the source said. Also, according to him, Russian managers of Huawei were sent “on long business trips” to the CIS countries.

Huawei does not comment on this information officially. Employees evacuated from Russia will be responsible for the development of the company not only in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan but also in all CIS countries, says Denis Kuskov, CEO of the Telecom Daily analytical agency.

Earlier, Huawei retail stores in Russia stopped selling phones and laptops in the shop windows. The company abandoned direct deliveries to the country in March, and the new schemes have not yet been launched, since Huawei is not on the list of goods for parallel imports. "As a result, most of their goods are with "Not For Sale" signs in the shops," Kommersant wrote.

The Russian authorities hoped that Chinese electronics manufacturers would replace Western equipment in the face of sanctions. However, Huawei, Lenovo Group and Xiaomi decided to quietly leave the Russian market in order not to fall under secondary sanctions and maintain access to Western technologies.

Chinese laptop deliveries to Russia fell by 40%, smartphones by 66%, and telecommunications equipment by 98% in the first month of the war. In June, Huawei began closing its stores in Russia.
