Homel Resident Files Statement Against Propagandist Azaronak With Investigative Committee

The article provides for up to five years of imprisonment.

Homel volunteer Illia Mironau has filed a statement to the Investigative Committee with a request to initiate a criminal case against the propagandist of STV TV channel Ryhor Azaronak. This is reported by the Stodzen edition.

The Homel resident noted in his letter that on January 18, 2023 the STV channel website published an article with the video "Azaronak: a Step Towards Those Who Want to Return - This is a Stalinist Step, This is the Strongest Will of Lukashenka".

According to Illia Mironau, Azaronak in this video has committed actions "aimed at inciting hatred and hostility, as well as humiliating the honor and dignity of a group of people on the grounds of belonging to a particular social group".

Illia Mironau demanded to prosecute Ryhor Azaronak under part 1 of Article 130 of the Criminal Code. The article provides for up to five years of imprisonment.

We remind that Illia Mironau is known for his "Write Letters" initiative aimed at supporting political prisoners. He himself has written more than 2,500 letters. The initiative has been nominated for the National Human Rights Prize in 2021.

On September 30, 2021, Mironau was detained in the "Zeltser case" over comments on the internet following the deaths of IT worker Andrei Zeltser and KGB officer Dzmitry Fedasiuk in Minsk. Initially Illia was charged under Article 130 of the Criminal Code for "inciting hatred". But during the investigation the charge was not confirmed and the article was replaced with Article 369-1 of the Criminal Code "Discrediting the Republic of Belarus".

Mironau spent more than a year in pre-trial detention. On October 24, 2022 he was sentenced to 1.5 years in a general regime penal colony, but was released in the courtroom, because a day in the remand prison is equal to 1.5 days in the colony, and Illia had already served his sentence. He was also fined 6,400 roubles.
