He was accused of "fakes".

On Wednesday, the Basmanny Court in Moscow sentenced in absentia Russian journalist Aleksandr Nevzorov to eight years in prison, finding him guilty of "spreading disinformation about the Russian army," TASS reported from the courtroom.

The sentence was handed down by Judge Evgenia Nikolaeva. In addition, the journalist is banned from administering Internet resources for four years after serving his sentence.

Nevzorov's defence representative will appeal against the court verdict.

"We will appeal against the verdict, as there is no corpus delicti in Nevzorov's case," lawyer Nadezhda Fedoseyeva said. "Nevzorov is a talented journalist, a historian, he carried out his activities in accordance with the law on the media, he did not go beyond the limits," the lawyer said.

Nevzorov himself is now abroad.
