Key European NATO Country Reacts To Decision To Deploy Nuclear Weapons In Belarus

The statement of the German Foreign Ministry.

Vladimir Putin's statement about the deployment of nuclear weapons in neighboring Belarus has drawn criticism from the German government, writes Welt.

The country's foreign ministry said there was a “further nuclear intimidation attempt”.

“The comparison made by President Putin with NATO's nuclear involvement is misleading and cannot justify the move announced by Russia,” the agency said.

It is noted that in a number of declarations at the international level Belarus has pledged to be free from nuclear weapons.

From the point of view of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), the deployment of Russian nuclear weapons in Belarus could lead to disaster. Putin's plan is “an extremely dangerous escalation”, the organization said.

“In the context of the war in Ukraine, the risk of misjudgment or misinterpretation is extremely high,” ICAN said.

The organization recalled that the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons prohibits states from allowing foreign nuclear weapons into their territory. The treaty, adopted in 2017, has so far been signed by 92 states. Russia and Belarus are not among them. The states where the U.S. nuclear bases are located — Germany, Belgium, Italy, the Netherlands and Turkey — also did not agree.

Important to note, yesterday on the air of the Russia 24 TV channel, Russian President Putin announced the opening of a storage facility for tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus on July 1, 2023. Control over tactical nuclear weapons will be carried out by the Russian side.
