Kadyrov's Personal Army Has Tripled During War In Ukraine

The number of units under his control has increased from seven to 20.
With the start of Russia's large-scale war against Ukraine, the size of the personal army of Chechnya head Ramzan Kadyrov has tripled, which is confirmed by the data of the investigation by “Proekt.Details”.
Until 2022, Kadyrov controlled 7 units, mainly from the structure of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Russian National Guard, with a total of about 6-8 thousand fighters. According to the investigation, by December 2024, the number of units under his control increased to 20, including formations from the Russian Ministry of Defense, which were not previously part of his zone of influence.
Ten units are new formations, eight are formally subordinate to the Russian Ministry of Defense, two units represent the “Russian National Guard”.
As of February 25, 2022, about 12 thousand people were present at Kadyrov's inspection, although their exact distribution among units remains unknown. At the last review at the end of 2024, Kadyrov announced 25 thousand participants. However, it is unknown whether all of them were part of the official security agencies.
Army structure
The security units under Kadyrov's command have different numbers and purposes:
Akhmad Kadyrov Police Regiment — about 1,300 fighters (similar to the Moscow police regiment).
OMON units and Rosgvardia regiments — up to 1,000 people.
Motorized battalions — up to 500 people.
SOBR units — several hundred fighters.
By the end of 2024, new units appeared in Kadyrov's structure: two additional Rosgvardia regiments — the 94th and 96th, an operational battalion, a police regiment for the protection of facilities, as well as 8 units from the Russian Ministry of Defense.
