Reuters Reveals Details Of Bashar Assad's Escape From Syria
BASHAR ASAD

An hour before his escape, the dictator gathered officers and assured them that Russia would help.

A few hours before his escape from Syria, Bashar Assad assured about 30 officers from the security forces at a meeting that Russian military support was on the way and called on ground troops to hold their positions, one of the officers present at the briefing told Reuters.

More than a dozen people familiar with the events told the agency that Assad had told almost no one about his plans to flee Syria. Thus, on Saturday, December 7 (a day before the fall of Damascus), Assad told his aide when he finished work that he was going home, but instead he headed to the airport, according to one of the sources close to the dictator.

He also called his media adviser Buthaina Shaaban and asked her to come to his home to write him a speech, the source told Reuters. She arrived but found no one there.

Bloomberg previously reported that Russian intelligence officers helped Assad escape. According to the agency's sources, they took the dictator through a Russian airbase in Syria, while the plane's transponder was turned off so that it could not be tracked.

In addition, according to the sources, before the escape, Moscow convinced the Syrian dictator that he would lose the fight against armed rebels. After that, Assad was offered a safe way to leave if he agreed to do so “immediately”, three sources familiar with the situation said.
