DW: EU Preparing New Sanctions Against Lukashenka Regime

The new package will be discussed on December 16.

The foreign ministers of the European Union will discuss a new package of sanctions against the regime of Aliaksandr Lukashenka on Monday, December 16. This was reported by Deutsche Welle, citing a speech by a high-ranking official at a briefing in Brussels on Friday, December 13.

According to two diplomatic sources of DW, new candidates for inclusion in the sanctions list will be discussed.

He called the situation in Belarus very difficult and recalled that there are at least 1,300 political prisoners in the country, while presidential “elections” were scheduled for January 26.

“This can be called an election, but we are saying that Lukashenka is simply officially appointing himself president for a seventh mandate,” the official said.

According to another DW source, the European Union believes that these elections will be neither free nor fair.

“The outcome of the elections is already known, but we want to send a signal,” another European diplomat said.

RFE/RL journalist Rikard Jozwiak reports that the EU plans to impose sanctions on two Belarusian companies and 26 individuals. These are mainly businessmen and judges.

Important to note, this week, the Days of Belarus were held in Brussels. The EU also announced the allocation of 30 million euros to further support Belarusians. Thus, the total amount of EU assistance mobilized since 2020 has reached 170 million euros.
