They demand to declare Ivanishvili's regime illegitimate.
The four largest opposition forces in Georgia have appealed to the European Union following the approval of Georgian Dream candidate Mikheil Kavelashvili as the new president. They are calling for the "self-proclaimed regime" of pro-Russian Bidzina Ivanishvili to be declared illegitimate.
This was reported by the Georgian media outlet SOVA.
The above-mentioned letter is addressed to the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas and the foreign ministers of the EU member states.
The appeal states that Georgia is facing an unprecedented political crisis that requires immediate action from the European Union.
The authors of the appeal note that the regime's plan to elect Mikheil Kavelashvili as the sixth president of Georgia worsens an already difficult situation. The opposition forces note that Kavelashvili was one of the initiators of the law on "foreign agents" and often engages in active anti-Western propaganda.
The opposition notes that after the election of the self-proclaimed and illegitimate parliament, it will have neither independence nor legitimacy.
The authors of the letter call for urgent action to support the Georgian people and protect European values. In particular, to declare "the self-proclaimed regime of Bidzina illegitimate" in all relevant statements of the European Union.
The Georgian opposition also has other demands:
the immediate and unconditional release of all detained politicians, activists and peaceful demonstrators;
the introduction of targeted sanctions against those responsible for undermining democracy, in particular against Bidzina Ivanishvili and his entourage, who are involved in political repressions;
ending visa-free travel and restricting visa regime for officials associated with the illegitimate Georgian Dream government;
to condemn violent actions against peaceful protesters, journalists and activists.
The letter addressed to the EU officials was signed by Nika Melia (Coalition for Change), Tina Bokuchava (Unity - National Movement), Mamuka Khazaradze (Strong Georgia), Zaza Tavadze (Gakharia for Georgia).
