The issue was discussed at the highest level during Blinken's visit to Kyiv.
The US authorities want to receive from the Ukrainian leadership a detailed strategy of strikes on targets deep inside the territory of the Russian Federation before lifting restrictions on using long-range weapons.
This is stated in a piece by Bloomberg.
According to the agency, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and British foreign policy chief David Lammy allegedly tried to put pressure on Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky on this issue during their visit to Kyiv on September 11.
They wanted to get from the Ukrainian president a long-term plan for the next year. The sources say Ukraine's partners are seeking a better understanding of what Kyiv intends to achieve before deciding whether to grant permission to attack targets on Russian territory with Western long-range weapons.
The article mentions a meeting scheduled for September 13 between US President Joe Biden and the head of the British government, Keir Starmer, who plan to discuss the issue. At the same time, the agency does not expect significant changes in the restrictions this week.
At the same time, The Guardian published an article which claims that the British authorities have already authorised Ukraine to attack targets in Russia with Storm Shadow missiles, but this will not be publicly announced during the upcoming meeting between Biden and Starmer.
