‘Putin Must Feel The Price Of His War’

Zelensky discussed sanctions against the shadow tanker fleet of the Russian Federation with Biden.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held talks with US President Joe Biden. The parties discussed a new package of sanctions aimed at limiting the financing of aggression.

The head of state wrote about this in his Telegram channel. He noted that he expressed condolences over the tragedy in California.

“I spoke with President Biden. I expressed condolences in connection with the terrible fires in California, the loss of people. I noted the heroism of the Americans who are helping to save lives from fire and stop the spread of forest fires. I expressed our gratitude for the support of our state, our independence and for the consolidation of the international community. Together we have created a global coalition of defenders of freedom and the principles of international peace and security,” the statement said.

Also, the key issue of the negotiations was the new restrictions aimed at the shadow tanker fleet of the Russian Federation, which is used for the illegal export of energy resources and the financing of military actions against Ukraine. The President noted the importance of sanctions pressure, noting that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin should personally feel the financial consequences of his war.

“We discussed the details of the new US sanctions package regarding Russian energy, which helps Putin finance the war. It is very important that America has now hit the shadow tanker fleet of Russia and such companies as Gazpromneft and Surgutneftegaz, which accumulate money personally for Putin. He must feel the price of his war, losing from his wallets. I am grateful to America, both parties, both houses of Congress, which support quite fair pressure on Russia for unprovoked and criminal aggression,” Zelensky emphasized.

In addition to the economic aspect, the leaders discussed the situation at the front. The head of state stressed the importance of strengthening air defense to protect civilians from daily missile and drone attacks. Zelensky emphasized the effectiveness of the “Patriot” systems and the need to increase them.

“We appreciate that President Biden said: preserving and protecting Ukraine's independence is critical for all of Europe and the democratic world. We will definitely stand firm and achieve sustainable peace for our people and country,” Zelensky concluded.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed gratitude to US President Joe Biden, his administration, and the entire American people for the new package of sanctions against the Russian Federation, announced on January 10, 2025. These measures are aimed at more than 400 entities associated with the Russian energy sector, including Surgutneftegaz.

The administration of US President Joe Biden has imposed new energy sanctions against Russia, but assured that these measures are not a bargaining chip for future negotiations to end the war in Ukraine. According to White House adviser John Kirby, there is currently no expectation that Russia and Ukraine are ready to negotiate.
