Way Of Evacuation In Case Of War Discussed In Vilnius

The river may be involved.

Vilnius Mayor Valdas Benkunskas has said that in the event of war or natural disaster, the Nyaris (Vilija) River may become one of the ways to evacuate the Lithuanian capital.

This is reported by LRT.

According to the Vilnius mayor, he has consulted the army and ‘experts in this matter’ on adapting the river for evacuation.

‘One evacuation route could be the Nyaris, if we have a blockade of land transport infrastructure and some other subversive elements,’ Valdas Benkunskas said.

He cited the advantage of the river as being something that cannot be ‘blown up or blocked’.

‘We are very seriously considering that this could be one of our evacuation routes,’ he said.

One problem is that sailing downriver toward Kaunas, a vessel with a larger draft would have difficulty navigating the river's six bends.

He said the Inland Waterways Administration is to assess what needs to be done to make the Nyaris passable for ‘more serious vessels.’

‘These studies, as far as I understand, have been done, they have been analysed, these works have been included in the estimates, and the money is really small in the context of whole defence projects, up to 10 million euros,’ the mayor said.

‘Recreation, tourism and all other things are also important, but in a military context, in terms of military mobility, we have a very different background, so these works have to be done as soon as possible,’ he said.
