Netanyahu Won't Fly To Gaza Peace Summit In Egypt
Benjamin Netanyahu

What's the reason?

Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu will not participate in the peace summit on the Gaza Strip that Egypt is convening.

This is according to a statement from the office of the Israeli prime minister, reports The Times of Israel.

The prime minister's office noted that he will not fly to Egypt because of the Shmini Atzeret - Simchat Torah holiday, which begins tonight, October 13.

The office specified that Netanyahu thanked US President Donald Trump for inviting him to the summit and his "efforts to expand the circle of peace - peace through strength."

Netanyahu's office did not mention Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, who invited him by phone today.

According to Israeli media, the prime minister canceled the trip allegedly because of fears of conflict within his coalition if he traveled during a religious holiday. However, the ultra-Orthodox United Judaism party said it had made no threats on the matter.

Shmini Atzeret and Simchat Torah

Shmini Atzeret and Simchat Torah are the final holidays of the fall Jewish cycle.

Shmini Atzeret (translated from Hebrew as "Eighth Meeting") symbolizes the end of the holiday season and a special time of spiritual union with God without external rituals.

The next day is Simchat Torah, a celebration of the joy of Torah, when the annual cycle of reading the Scriptures ends and a new one begins. This day is filled with dancing, song and solemn processions with Torah scrolls in synagogues around the world.
