Israel's prime minister is under investigation on corruption charges.
US President Donald Trump, during a speech to the Knesset, urged his Israeli counterpart Yitzhak Herzog to pardon Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, who is being investigated on corruption charges.
"I have an idea: Mr. President, why don't you pardon him? Go ahead and pardon him!"<...> Cigars and champagne - who the hell cares?", Trump said. His suggestion was met with applause.
Trump has previously said the investigation into Netanyahu should be dropped. "This kind of HUNTING FOR WITCHES for a man who has given so much is unthinkable to me," he noted.
The investigation into Netanyahu was launched in December 2016; in 2019 he was formally indicted in several corruption cases, Netanyahu denies them.
The prime minister is accused of receiving illegal gifts worth more than 700,000 shekels ($213,000), including cigars and champagne.
Bribery in Israel can face up to ten years in prison, fraud and breach of trust - up to three years.
