The meeting will be held as early as October 17.

US President Donald Trump will hold a meeting with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky at the White House on Friday, October 17. The American leader confirmed this while speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One. Zelensky also said that he was going to travel to Washington. "I think that we need to discuss the sequence of steps that I want to propose," - said the Ukrainian President. He specified that the main topic of the meeting would be to provide Ukraine with air defense systems (air defense systems) and long-range strike capabilities to put pressure on Russia.

The meeting between Trump and Zelensky will be a continuation of their phone conversations on October 11 and 12, during which they discussed Russian attacks on Ukrainian energy and the possibility of supplying Ukraine with Tomahawk cruise missiles. The latter issue will take center stage during the planned White House talks, two sources familiar with the meeting preparations told Axios. "There are certain issues that cannot be discussed on the phone," one of the sources explained to the publication.

Before that, Trump said he might discuss with Putin the transfer of long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine. "I might say: listen, if this war is not settled, I will send them Tomahawk. I can send them. The Tomahawk is an incredible weapon, very offensive. And frankly, Russia doesn't need it," the White House chief noted. He expressed hope that Putin would agree to end the war. Otherwise, "it will end badly for him," Trump added.

Zelensky, for his part, argued that Tomahawk missile strikes, if Washington hands them over to Kiev, would only hit military targets, which he attributed to Russia's energy infrastructure, among others. Putin earlier warned that handing over the Tomahawks to Kiev would be a "qualitatively new" stage of escalation and would "destroy" relations between Moscow and Washington. He also emphasized that Russian air defenses are ready to shoot down the American missiles, and their use by Ukraine will not change the balance of forces on the battlefield.

The flight range of Tomahawk missiles, depending on the modification, is from 1,600 to 2,500 kilometers. In case of their transfer to Ukraine, up to 1,945 Russian military facilities will be in the kill zone, experts of the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) have calculated. In their opinion, Ukraine will probably be able to undermine the Russian army's actions on the frontline by targeting the rear areas that supply it with weapons and support its offensive operations.
