What is the president of the United States demanding?

US President Donald Trump has warned that US aid to Argentina could be cut if libertarian party leader Javier Miley loses the election.

This is reported by TRT World.

Trump called Mealey a "great leader" and pledged "full support," emphasizing that Mealey's success is critical to continued U.S. aid.

The meeting between Trump and Mealey came amid a $20 billion U.S. currency swap with Argentina that exchanges stable dollars for volatile pesos to support the Argentine economy.

Trump said, however, that if Mealey loses, "we will not be generous to Argentina."

Mealey, for his part, received direct assurances of support from Trump: "He's totally in line with MAGA, it's 'Make Argentina Great Again,'" Trump noted, referring to his own slogan, "Make America Great Again."

What is known about the U.S. support

The U.S. administration has already pledged $20 billion to support Argentina's struggling economy. But that support has so far failed to reassure markets or strengthen Miley's position in pre-election polls.

The results of the Oct. 26 election will determine whether Miley can implement tough spending-cutting reforms or face legislative resistance over the next two years.

Trump has emphasized that helping Argentina is beneficial to the U.S. because it supports a "great philosophy" and a strategic ally in Latin America.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also reiterated a willingness to take "any exceptional measures for market stability," a rare direct U.S. intervention in Latin America's currency markets.

Miley emphasized in his comments that U.S. support is a recognition of strategic partnership and a defense of the ideas of freedom, and reiterated Argentina's commitment to U.S. and Israeli interests.

At the same time, there is speculation in Argentina that Trump may demand certain political and economic concessions from Miley in exchange for financial support. Argentina's Economy Minister Luis Caputo has assured that there are no plans yet to dollarize the economy or change the peso exchange rate, despite pre-election rumors.

This meeting and Trump's statements underscore the high stakes for Argentina: not only domestic politics, but also the country's continued international support depends on the outcome of the election.
