Russia Has Started To Dilute Gasoline

Because of the shortage.

The gasoline shortage in Russia due to the AFU drone strikes on oil refining facilities, which has already covered at least 57 regions, has caused an artificial reduction in the quality of fuel at gas stations. This was reported to the "National News Service" (NSN) by the head of the Union of Auto Service Stations of Russia, Yuri Valko. According to him, gas stations began diluting gasoline with additives.

"Producers of Russian gasoline began to save on quality because of the inability to raise prices. There is a connection between these rumors and what happened (we are talking about engine failures in Geely cars). Many people started to increase the octane number due to some additives because of the economic situation against the background of shortages in some regions," said Valko.

He specified that there are no reliable facts of this yet, but a similar situation in Russia occurred about 15 years ago: "It was possible to pour fuel and immediately go to the car service. Now, unfortunately, we can return to the same stage."

The gasoline shortage arose as a result of the Ukrainian army's campaign to hit Russian oil refineries (refineries), which began in August and affected every third refinery in the country, or more than 20 major refineries. The International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates that refining volumes in Russia have fallen by about 10 percent to 5 million bpd against this backdrop and will not be restored until mid-2026.

To alleviate the crisis in the fuel market, authorities have banned the export of gasoline from Russia, quadrupled fuel purchases from Belarus, and zeroed import duties to start supplies from China, South Korea and Singapore.

The government also considered lifting the ban on the use of monomethylaniline (MMA), an octane-boosting additive that helps increase output, by oil refineries. Due to its high toxicity and cancer risks, this substance is banned in most countries of the world, while in Russia it was used until 2016.
