Putin asked the US president not to hand over missiles to Kiev.
US President Donald Trump did not rule out supplying Ukraine with long-range Tomahawk missiles in a phone conversation with Vladimir Putin, but the American is not expected to approve such a decision at a meeting with Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky, sources told CNN.
The conversation with Putin took place the day before, on October 16, at the initiative of the Russian side. The meeting with Zelensky is scheduled for the evening of October 17 Moscow time. CNN's interlocutors admitted that Trump may change his position on Tomahawk after being alone with Zelensky.
The channel's sources claim that the plans to supply weapons to Ukraine have been developed, and Trump's order is expected. He intends to ask Zelensky how Ukraine plans to use the weapons.
The threat to send Tomahawk is one of the tools of diplomatic settlement, they said. Some in the U.S. administration fear escalation after the transfer of these missiles to Kiev, while others say that all fears of escalation before because of the shipment of new weapons were in vain.
Trump, when asked if the Russian president was trying to prevent the sale of the missiles, said, "What did you think he was going to say? "Please sell these Tomahawk?" The Republican also said after his conversation with Putin that the U.S. has plenty of Tomahawk missiles, but they also need them themselves.
Zelensky pointed out that Ukraine would strike military targets and energy facilities in Russia if it received the Tomahawk.
