Axios: Trump's Frustration With Russia Reaches New Heights After Rubio And Lavrov Talk

This conclusion paved the way for the cancelation of the meeting with Putin and the decision to impose new sanctions.

U.S. President Donald Trump's frustration with aggressor country Russia reached "new heights" after a phone call between U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on October 20.

This was reported by Axios with reference to a US official.

According to him, the conversation ended inconclusively and led to the conclusion that "the Russians are not in a position to reach an agreement to end the war against Ukraine." As a consequence, there is no point in holding a meeting between Trump and Russian dictator Vladimir Putin in Budapest.

"This conclusion paved the way for Trump's decision to impose new sanctions against Russia," Axios writes.

The publication also emphasizes that this is the first time the US has imposed sanctions against Russia since Trump took office. For months, the US leader has been saying that imposing sanctions against Moscow would undermine his diplomatic efforts to end the war. The change in position signals that he now considers this approach a failure

The new anti-Russian sanctions were imposed after Trump canceled a meeting with Putin, and this shows his extreme displeasure with the Russian dictator, Axios summarizes.

On October 20, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov had a telephone conversation during which, as the US State Department noted, they discussed "next steps" in continuing talks between the two leaders on ending the war in Ukraine.

The Kremlin, meanwhile, described the conversation as a "constructive discussion" during which they discussed "possible concrete steps to implement the agreements" reached by Trump and Putin.

After the conversation between Rubio and Lavrov, U.S. officials concluded that Moscow's position had not changed and remained maximalist, according to CNN.

The channel quoted a White House official as saying that the meeting between Rubio and Lavrov, which was supposed to take place this week, had been postponed for now for "some time." The source said Rubio would probably not recommend a meeting between Trump and Putin next week.

On October 22, during a briefing in the Oval Office, US President Donald Trump confirmed that he had canceled a previously planned meeting with the Russian dictator. He also acknowledged his disappointment.

"All I can say is that we always have good conversations with Vladimir [Putin], but they go nowhere," Trump said.
