The Senate again failed to pass a bill to fund the government.
The US has entered the second week of a partial federal government shutdown after the Senate failed to pass either of two competing bills to restore funding for federal agencies.
According to The Guardian.
The Senate's fifth vote on a Republican bill that would have reopened the government ended with a 52 to 42 vote, well below the 60 needed for passage. The Democrats' proposal was defeated by a party-line vote of 50 to 45.
Because of funding shortfalls, many government agencies and departments remain closed and thousands of government workers have been furloughed. President Donald Trump's administration has warned that it is prepared to make further cuts to federal staff.
Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said:
"After five failed votes, Republicans must realize they cannot move forward unless we come to a bipartisan agreement to solve the health care crisis."
Democrats insist that any bill must include concessions on health care, particularly the continuation of tax credits for the insured under the Affordable Care Act (ACA).
At the same time, President Trump allowed for the possibility of negotiations with Democrats.
"Right now we're in negotiations with Democrats that could lead to very good results. And I'm talking about good results on health care," Trump said.
