The Kremlin is paying for its deception.
Former US State Department special envoy for Ukraine Kurt Volker said that Russian President Vladimir Putin deceived American leader Donald Trump by promising to start negotiations to end the war, but failed to fulfill the promise. Volker said this in an interview with Euronews.
The diplomat said that back in August, Putin assured during his conversation with Trump that he would meet with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky. This agreement was reached when Trump was discussing the Ukrainian issue with European leaders at the White House. However, the Russian dictator never made contact, which, according to Volcker, caused personal irritation to the American president.
"Trump is disappointed. Putin promised him that he would meet with Zelensky, but deceived him, and Trump does not like to look weak, especially against the background of allies," the former diplomat said.
After Trump publicly announced the upcoming meeting, several countries even expressed their willingness to host the summit. But the Kremlin has since repeatedly rejected any talks with Kiev, with or without U.S. participation. Volker believes that this humiliation could prompt the Trump administration to take more decisive steps, in particular the transfer of Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine.
He noted Trump views international politics through the prism of benefits, and it is possible that arms deliveries to Ukraine could be part of a mutually beneficial deal. "Trump is a man of deals. If someone is willing to pay, that's an argument for him. His goal is to end the war, lift sanctions on Russia and make money. But as long as Putin continues to play lies and blackmail, the White House is ready to act differently," Volker emphasized.
The American politician added that the discussion on the supply of long-range missiles to Kiev may force Putin to return to negotiations no longer from a position of strength, but under the pressure of circumstances.
