“Your Courage Is A Powerful Symbol”

Members of the European Parliament send a letter of support to Andrzej Poczobut.

In the building of the European Parliament in Strasbourg, MEPs are collecting signatures for a collective letter to Belarusian political prisoner and leader of the Polish community in Belarus, Andrzej Poczobut. The initiative was launched by Małgorzata Gosiewska, head of the European Parliament’s delegation for relations with Belarus and an MEP from Poland.

The website Charter97.org publishes the text of the letter:

“Dear Andrzej, dear friend,

We write to you with deep solidarity and heartfelt concern. We constantly think of you and the other political prisoners. Your courage is a powerful symbol of the struggle for justice and freedom.

May these words bring you a little hope. We continue to pray and act for the day when you can be reunited with your loved ones. You remain with us in our thoughts and spirit.

With deepest respect and solidarity.”

Andrzej Poczobut is a well-known journalist from Hrodna and one of the leaders of the Union of Poles in Belarus. He was arrested on March 25, 2021, and sentenced to eight years in a high-security colony on charges of “calling for sanctions” and “inciting hatred.”

In March 2024, the Polish edition of Newsweek awarded Poczobut the Teresa Torańska Prize in the category “Figure of the Decade.”
