Italy Initiates A Worldwide Truce

The Foreign Minister gave the dates.

Italy will seek a world truce for the duration of the 2026 Winter Olympics, which will be held from February 6 to 22 next year.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said this, according to Ansa.

"We must be champions of peace," Tajani said on the sidelines of the 12th Italy-Latin America Conference in Rome.

He also emphasized that Italy supports the US plan for Gaza and, one should never lose hope for peace.

"Rome and Italy are increasingly becoming a crossroads of peace, development and growth. With the Milan Olympics in mind, we are presenting to the United Nations a proposal for an Olympic truce for all wars, including Ukraine and the Middle East," the Italian foreign minister added.

What is known about the Milan Olympics

The 2026 Winter Olympics will be held in the Italian cities of Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo. It will be the fourth Olympic Games held in Italy and the first in Milan.

It will also be the first Olympic Games with two host cities, and the first Winter Olympics since the 1984 Sarajevo Games to have opening and closing ceremonies in different locations.

For the first time, these Olympic Games will feature a ski mountaineering competition. Interestingly, for the 2026 Winter Olympics, the IOC has allowed the distance between venues to be increased so that skiing events can be held in a mountainous area, while indoor sports such as hockey and figure skating can be held in a big city more than 160 kilometers away.
