Netherlands To Start Assembling Drones To Support Ukraine

Already in the coming months.

The Netherlands will launch its first drone assembly production lines in the coming months, the country's defense minister Ruben Brekelmans said on social network X.

The day before, on October 6, he said that production of defense products had begun at the VDL plant in Born - in the province of Limburg in the southeast of the country.

"We are signing three agreements: for the production of vehicles, batteries and drones. Construction of this new flagship of our defense industry is well underway," Brekelmans wrote.

The Defense Ministry's press service stressed that equipment and resources from VDL will strengthen the armed forces not only in the Netherlands, but also in Ukraine.

"To continue to support Ukraine and deter Russia, we need to rapidly increase defense production. This requires innovation and industrialization, speed and scale," the head of the ministry stressed.

The Ministry of Defense leases 120,000 square meters of workshops and production space for defense production at a facility in South Limburg. According to Brekelmans, this is a former car factory, where a "huge production hall" is now empty.

It usually takes years to set up production of military products, but now there are both premises for these purposes and the relevant permits, the Defense Ministry said.

The Netherlands has significantly increased spending on arms and contingent supplies of military equipment in recent years, with a special focus on supporting Ukraine and modernizing its own armed forces. In April, Dutch King Willem-Alexander called on the country to "arm itself to the teeth."
