There are many casualties and injuries.

The incident took place in the city's densely populated old quarter, which is particularly closely guarded. At least eight people died and about 20 were injured in the blast.

"A slow-moving car stopped at a red light. There was an explosion in it and neighboring vehicles were also injured," Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha said.

He said the blast happened shortly before 7 p.m. local time. At least six cars and three autorickshaws (three-wheelers - ed. The area was cordoned off and police and forensic experts were working at the spot.

Police have detained the owner of the car

Police officials have detained the previous owner of the car, known only as Salman. Investigations into the incident are underway on all fronts, Indian Home Minister Amit Shah said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to the injured. The US embassy in Delhi warned citizens to avoid crowds near the Red Fort and tourist spots.

The Red Fort is a 17th century Mughal-era monument popular with tourists. Reuters recalls that Delhi has already been the target of terrorist attacks in the past: in the 1980s and 1990s and in 2011, the Indian capital was the site of bombings blamed on Islamist militants and separatists.
