What's Wrong With Lukashenko's Statement On Corruption

The dictator criticizes the system he himself built.

At the opening after reconstruction of the road bridge over the Pripyat River in Mozyr, Lukashenko defiantly turned to a group of his officials, including Gomel Oblast Executive Committee Chairman Ivan Krupko, and accused them of corruption, writes "Flagpole".

The dictator publicly, in his own style, "trashed" officials, mainly those responsible for road construction:

- They steal. These ones are stealing, too. Now we have found out that the State Control Committee is working now. What are they doing? We have private enterprises that have equipment. Asphalt pavers, rollers, loaders, excavators. Your bosses are renting this equipment. What for? Three to five times the cost. It is immediately alarming (...)

Why are you renting this equipment, paying five times more? You, having built this bridge, could have made money and bought a paver or a roller, a backhoe or a loader. You didn't. Why not? Get ready.

A source close to the sphere of road construction told Flagstaff about the essence of the problems - what Lukashenko is dissatisfied with.

According to the interlocutor, the equipment of state road-building enterprises is often in a "worn-out" condition, besides, there is a shortage of personnel: there are not enough drivers and other specialists:

- Therefore, it is more convenient to rent equipment with a crew from a private company. But this does not affect the final amount - the estimate remains the same. That is, there is no difference for the state budget: either the state DRSU rolled asphalt with its own roller, or took it from a private company - they will still pay the same price according to the estimate".

In addition, state enterprises will experience a serious problem with free working equipment - there is not enough of it, so there is no choice but to rent equipment from private companies.

Particularly it concerns cases when it is necessary to "heroically" enter the object by the appointed date, and then a large amount of equipment must work on this object at once. But the company doesn't have so much equipment, some of it is occupied at another facility, so they have to rent additional equipment.

- No damage to the state - the company can use third-party equipment at a loss to itself, but not to the state budget," emphasizes the interlocutor.

Thus, it turns out that Lukashenko's criticism is aimed at the whole system of governance built by him, while ostentatious accusations of corruption are just a populist move.
