India has reduced its purchases of Russian crude oil with delivery in December.
Most Indian refineries have refused to buy Russian oil. This happened due to anti-Russian sanctions and trade talks between the US and India, Bloomberg.
The agency's sources said that oil orders for the next month are made before the 10th of the current month. This month, five companies in India immediately rejected Russian oil for December.
This change in procurement policy came after Western sanctions were imposed on Russian oil giants Rosneft and Lukoil.
According to Kpler data, five companies accounted for two-thirds of India's oil imports from the aggressor country in 2025:
- Reliance Industries Ltd;
- Hindustan Petroleum Corp. Ltd;
- Bharat Petroleum Corp. Ltd;
- Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd;
- HPCL-Mittal Energy Ltd.
"The caution of these companies is partly due to trade talks between New Delhi and Washington. Trump said Monday that the two countries are moving closer to an agreement," the publication notes.
Bloomberg, citing sources, notes that during the talks, India pledged to buy more oil from the U.S.
Only two Indian companies plan to buy Russian crude in December - Indian Oil Corp. and Nayara Energy Ltd.
Indian Oil Corp. has purchased about 3.5 million barrels of ESPO oil, but the purchase is being made from suppliers that are not subject to new U.S. sanctions.
Nayara Energy Ltd. relies entirely on Russian oil, as Rosneft partially owns the company.
