Russian foreign minister makes excuses for disrupting Budapest summit.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has appealed to the United States to resume preparations for the summit between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump in Budapest, which was supposed to take place in late October but was derailed after the Kremlin refused to hold a cease-fire in Ukraine.
Moscow "is also ready to discuss with American colleagues the resumption of preparatory work for the summit," Lavrov said in an interview with Russian media on Tuesday. He said Budapest remains the preferred venue for the meeting "if and when the American colleagues resume their proposal."
State Department chief Marco Rubio has not spoken to Lavrov again since their last conversation on October 20, the minister acknowledged. At that time, the Russian foreign minister discussed with Rubio by phone the preparations for the summit in Budapest. However, Rubio recommended that Trump cancel the meeting, after which the US imposed a major package of sanctions against Russia for the first time since the Republican took over the White House.
Lavrov's words suggest that he does not still understand why the US canceled the summit. "We talked well, politely, without any disruption. We confirmed in principle the movement on the basis of the Anchorage understandings. And we parted ways. And the next step should have been a meeting of representatives of foreign policy, military, as I understand, departments, well, probably, intelligence services. But instead there was a public statement that there was no point in meeting," Lavrov said.
