Turkish Military Plane Crashes In Georgia

There were 20 servicemen on board.

A Turkish C-130 military transport plane flying from Azerbaijan to Turkey crashed on the Georgian-Azerbaijani border. This was reported by the Turkish Ministry of National Defense.

"Search and rescue operations have begun jointly with the authorities of Azerbaijan and Georgia," the ministry said.

The Georgian Interior Ministry said that the preliminary cause of the crash was a violation of flight safety rules.

"A Turkish military plane crashed in the municipality of Sighnakhi, about five kilometers from the state border of Georgia. The incident is being investigated under Article 275, Part IV of the Criminal Code of Georgia, which stipulates violation of the rules of flight safety or operation of air transportation, which caused human casualties by negligence. The Interior Ministry will gradually provide the public with detailed information about the incident," the Georgian Interior Ministry said.

Turkish agencies have not announced information about casualties or deaths, but Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has called Turkish President Recep Erdogan and expressed condolences over the tragedy.

"In connection with the crash of a military transport plane of the Turkish Air Force on the territory of Georgia, the Head of State expressed deep condolences to the President of Turkey, the families and loved ones of the dead servicemen, the brotherly people of Turkey. During the telephone conversation it was noted that the relevant state bodies of Azerbaijan and Turkey are in contact in connection with the crash," Aliyev's website reported.

Azerbaijani APA news agency with reference to the Turkish Defense Ministry reported that 20 servicemen were on board the crashed plane.
