EU Backs US Plans For Gas Extraction In Mediterranean Sea

This will help Europe to finally give up Russian gas.

The European Commission has backed a new agreement between Greece and ExxonMobil to explore and produce gas offshore in the Ionian Sea, according to Euractiv. Brussels believes that cooperation with "reliable partners" - primarily the United States - will help Europe finally abandon Russian gas.

Last week, Greece and ExxonMobil signed an agreement to explore in areas in the northwestern Ionian Sea. Criticism of environmentalists does not stop the Greek authorities: exploration work should be completed by 2027, and production - if the reserves turn out to be commercially significant - could start in 2030.

A European Commission source told Euractiv that the EU's main objective is to eliminate Russian gas in any form, and the US "has been and will remain a key partner of the EU."

Greece earlier signed the first long-term contract to supply the US with liquefied natural gas to buy 700 million cubic meters of gas a year from 2030 for 20 years. The supplies are part of Europe's commitment to buy $750 billion worth of energy from the United States over the next three years, according to Ursula von der Leyen's pledge to Donald Trump.
