The U.S. Armed Forces Africa Command has prepared three plans to protect Christians.

The U.S. Armed Forces Africa Command (AFRICOM) has prepared three plans on behalf of the Pentagon to protect Christians in Nigeria. This was reported by The New York Times, citing sources.

U.S. President Donald Trump earlier ordered the Pentagon to prepare for military intervention in Nigeria to protect Christians from attacks by Islamic militants.

The NYT's sources said there is little the U.S. military can do to quell the violence unless it is prepared to launch a campaign modeled on Iraq or Afghanistan, which no one seems to be seriously considering. However, the Pentagon does have a number of measures that could have a limited impact on the militants.

The piece said the U.S. Air Force could launch airstrikes on several known sites in northern Nigeria where the militants live. U.S. drones such as the MQ-9 Reaper and MQ-1 Predator could attack several vehicles and even convoys. In addition, the U.S. military could team up with Nigerian soldiers to raid villages and root out insurgents who have established themselves in rural settlements in the north of the country.

The Defense Department said these options were developed this week by representatives of the U.S. military's Africa Command for submission to the Pentagon's Joint Staff.
