Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban wants to persuade US President Donald Trump to ease new sanctions against Russia.

The Hungarian prime minister, who had expected political gains and increased investment after Donald Trump's return to the White House, finds himself in a tricky situation.
Despite Orban's affinity with the right-wing MAGA parties that propelled Trump to power, the Hungarian leader, who is due to visit Washington, is seeking to ease sanctions against Russia.
The measures threaten to undermine his already shaky attempts to run for a fifth consecutive term in next year's election.
To get an exemption, Orban is taking a package of proposals to the United States. According to sources, Budapest plans to sign a $100 million agreement with Westinghouse Electric to buy nuclear fuel to replace Russian fuel, and is also considering a $600 million contract to import U.S. liquefied natural gas over five years.
A separate memorandum is being worked out on the potential purchase of up to 10 small modular reactors worth up to $20 billion - which could be an alternative to a delayed Russian project to expand Hungary's nuclear power plant.
