The Serbian president said he could have reacted more strongly but did not want to be like his opponent.
Serbian President Alexandar Vucic and Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova have exchanged statements in absentia following the Serbian leader's words about the possibility of selling ammunition to European countries that could later transfer it to Ukraine.
Vucic said in an interview with RTS that he did not intend to respond to Zakharova's harsh remarks, although he "could have done so."
"I waited a day and a half not to respond. Otherwise, of course, I would have reacted much more strongly yesterday, but when you are president, you should count not to ten but to a hundred and not react in this way," Vucic said.
He also said he did not want to be rude, but not for lack of courage or arguments.
"I will never do that because I care about Serbia's interests, because I value and love the Russian people, I respect them and I will not allow myself what Ms. Zakharova allowed herself," Vucic said.
The Serbian president said earlier that the country may reconsider its position on imposing sanctions against Russia. He also said he saw no problem if Serbian ammunition ended up in Ukraine.
Zakharova, commenting on the Serbian leader's words, ironically said that after reading Vucic's interview, she wondered "whether there is really only one President Vucic," propaganda media reported.
"It seems to me that interviews are given by different people. We hear some interviews and statements when he is in Moscow. We hear other statements when he gives interviews in other geographical locations," the Foreign Ministry speaker said.
Russia has previously accused Belgrade of supplying arms to Ukraine: in the spring of 2025, Russian intelligence claimed that Serbian defense companies were allegedly shipping ammunition to Ukraine through intermediaries and fake end-user certificates. Vucic reacted by saying that "some things that were claimed are not true."
The topic of Serbian ammunition shipments to Ukraine had already surfaced in 2023. After secret Pentagon documents were leaked, it emerged that the Ukrainian army could have received Serbian ammunition worth about 800 million euros through intermediaries.
