Kubilius: EU Should Prepare Its Peace Plan For Ukraine

European defense commissioner urged to stop waiting for signals from the U.S.

European Defense Commissioner Andrius Kubilius believes Europe should develop its own proposals to stop the Russia-Ukraine war if the current negotiations initiated by the Trump administration end in nothing, Politico reported.

Kubilius criticized Europe for not taking the initiative and only reacting in response to US attempts to stop the Russia-Ukraine war.

"Every six months we see new 'plans' and in a way I have the feeling that we are here as if we are waiting for plans that will come from Washington this year. Such plans should also come from Brussels or from Berlin," the European Commissioner said.

In his opinion, it is "extremely important" for Europe to develop its own package of proposals - in order to guarantee itself a place at the negotiating table.

"We should be able to discuss two plans: one European and one possibly prepared by our American friends... in order to find synergy between these two plans and achieve the best result," Andrius Kubilius said.

He also suggested that Europe should consider in its planning a scenario if NATO's Article 5 "does not work" when it becomes necessary to apply it.

According to Politico, European leaders still hold out hope that Trump will return to his conclusion that Russia is to blame for the ongoing war in Ukraine, but are also mentally preparing for a "worst-case" scenario in which the U.S. distances itself and leaves Ukraine without any help.
