Vilnius's patience has run out.
The Lithuanian State Defense Council will discuss in mid-December which Minsk assets located in Lithuania can be frozen or confiscated.
"We talked at the State Defense Council about comprehensive air defense. Now we are talking about other issues that will be raised at the next State Defense Council. First of all, what assets Belarus has and what are the possible options in this sphere. We are talking about freezing or confiscation of Belarusian assets located in the Republic of Lithuania," said President Gitanas Nauseda on air of the local TV channel LRT.
Earlier, Presidential National Security Advisor Marius Cesnulyavicius announced a meeting of the State Defense Council for mid-December. The agenda was not announced.
After the last meeting of the council, held in November, it was announced that Lithuania will develop an integrated air defense system worth several hundred million euros over the next three years.
The relations between Belarus and Lithuania escalated in October. Then, amid the intensification of smuggled cigarette shipments to Lithuania (this leads to periodic shutdown of Vilnius airport, as smugglers use weather probes to transport goods), Vilnius decided to close checkpoints on the border with Belarus until the end of November.
After that, it turned out that about 1.8 thousand Lithuanian trucks, as well as cargo trailers and semi-trailers remained in Belarus without the possibility to go to Lithuania. The Belarusian government first restricted their movement, but then decided to release the drivers, while the vehicles were left in special parking lots. The Lithuanian government decided to open the border early to return the trucks, which was done on the night of November 20, but it did not solve the problem. Minsk demands negotiations at the diplomatic level, which Vilnius does not agree to.
